Decadent Sourdough Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup oil (vegetable or melted butter)
  • 1 cup sourdough starter (unfed or discard)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup hot coffee (enhances chocolate flavor)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional, for extra richness)

Step-by-Step Recipe

  1. Preheat oven
    Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a cake pan.
  2. Mix dry ingredients
    In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Mix wet ingredients
    In another bowl, combine sourdough starter, eggs, oil, vanilla extract, and milk.
  4. Combine mixtures
    Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture and mix until smooth.
  5. Add coffee
    Pour in hot coffee and stir gently until the batter becomes thin and silky.
  6. Add chocolate chips (optional)
    Fold in chocolate chips for extra richness.
  7. Bake
    Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.
  8. Cool & serve
    Let it cool completely before slicing. Serve as is or with chocolate ganache or whipped cream.

  • Don’t skip the coffee—it enhances the chocolate flavor without tasting like coffee.
  • Use sourdough discard for best texture and flavor balance.
  • Let the cake rest overnight for even deeper flavor.
